U.S. equities finished Friday with a modest risk-off tone after a week that still ended positively. The S&P 500 slipped 0.17%, the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.28%, and the Dow declined 0.20% as weaker-than-expected retail sales, elevated oil prices and renewed geopolitical tension encouraged some profit-taking near record levels.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq nevertheless logged a third consecutive weekly advance, underscoring how resilient the broader tape remains even as investors become less willing to reward merely solid results from richly valued growth names.

$RDDT surged 11.56% on one of the session clearest event-driven catalysts after S&P Dow Jones Indices confirmed Reddit will enter the S&P 500 before the opening bell on August 18. The move has an unusually tangible flow component: J.P. Morgan estimates index-tracking funds may need to purchase roughly 16.7 million shares, almost three times Reddit average daily trading volume since its IPO. That forced-buying dynamic helped turn the announcement into an immediate repricing event rather than simply a symbolic index milestone.

$NU climbed 9.22% after Nu Holdings delivered the first billion-dollar quarterly profit in its history. Second-quarter net income reached approximately $1.06 billion, up from $636.8 million a year earlier, while net interest income increased to roughly $3.20 billion from $2.10 billion. The quarter reinforced the argument that Nubank is moving beyond pure customer-acquisition growth and increasingly converting its scale across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia into substantial earnings power.

$AMAT fell 4.95% despite another fundamentally strong quarter, a classic example of expectations rather than absolute results driving the tape. Applied Materials delivered higher quarterly revenue and earnings, yet investors had already embedded an aggressive AI-capex and semiconductor-equipment growth trajectory into the valuation. With the shares having roughly doubled during 2026 before Friday, a strong report without a meaningful upside reset was insufficient to sustain momentum. The reaction also weighed on the broader semiconductor complex and highlighted how narrow the margin for error has become in premium-valued AI beneficiaries.

$WDAY dropped 3.55%, giving back part of Thursday roughly 18% takeover-driven rally after reports that Silver Lake was in discussions to acquire Workday. Friday action looked less like a rejection of the potential transaction and more like normalization after an abrupt merger-arbitrage repricing. The larger read-through remains important for enterprise software: credible private-equity interest in a large-cap software platform offers an external valuation marker at a time when many software multiples have been compressed by concerns that AI could disrupt incumbent business models.

$AEHR gained 8.73% as momentum continued in one of 2026 strongest semiconductor-equipment names. The stock advance comes against a backdrop of accelerating demand for Aehr wafer-level test and burn-in systems tied to AI processors, silicon photonics and data-center infrastructure. The company recently reported record quarterly bookings and an effective backlog of approximately $100 million, providing substantial visibility into projected fiscal 2027 revenue of $130 million to $150 million.

$GPUS sank 13.89% after Hyperscale Data disclosed that it had sold roughly 685 Bitcoin for approximately $43 million while announcing additional corporate actions. For a stock whose investor base has become closely tied to Bitcoin exposure and digital-asset optionality, a material reduction in crypto holdings can create an immediate perception shift even when management has strategic reasons for monetizing the assets. The heavy volume accompanying the decline suggests the market treated the announcements as a meaningful change in the near-term risk/reward profile rather than routine treasury management.

$TSN rose 3.21% after Tyson Foods announced the closure of its Joslin, Illinois beef facility amid an historically tight U.S. cattle supply. The operational retrenchment illustrates the unusual economics facing beef processors: consumers have continued absorbing elevated beef prices, but sharply constrained cattle availability has pressured plant utilization and processing margins. Investors appeared to view the closure as a potentially necessary capacity adjustment rather than simply a signal of deteriorating demand.

$LTRN declined 4.18% following Lantern Pharma quarterly report, with GAAP loss per share of $0.57 coming in $0.19 below consensus expectations. With only about 150,000 shares changing hands, the move occurred on comparatively thin liquidity, making the percentage decline less informative than the high-volume reactions seen elsewhere in Friday tape. For early-stage biotechnology companies such as Lantern, cash runway, clinical progress and pipeline execution remain substantially more important valuation variables than any single quarterly EPS miss.

Friday session ultimately showed a market becoming increasingly selective rather than broadly defensive. Indexes barely moved, but single-stock dispersion was substantial: Reddit benefited from mechanical index demand, Nu was rewarded for a major profitability milestone, while Applied Materials demonstrated that even strong execution can produce a selloff when expectations have moved faster than fundamentals. That divergence is likely to remain the defining feature of the late-summer tape, with positioning, valuation and company-specific catalysts mattering considerably more than the direction of the headline indexes.
