02 Sep 2026$BE Bloom Energy is among the leading candidates to join the S&P 500 during the quarterly rebalancing later this month. The decision is expected after trading ends Friday, with the changes scheduled to take effect around September 21. Bloom Energy fell 1.72%.
$LNG Cheniere Energy is also a leading candidate, with both Cheniere Energy and Bloom Energy valued at approximately $60 billion. That level is significantly above the current minimum threshold of approximately $22.7 billion for index inclusion. Cheniere Energy has been considered a natural candidate for some time because it meets the size requirement, while the strength of energy stocks this year could improve its chances. No new energy company has been added to the index since 2022.
$BE Bloom Energy is in focus after its market value increased significantly. The company operates in energy infrastructure, a sector receiving more attention as electricity demand from data centers and AI infrastructure rises. Index inclusion could become an additional catalyst alongside this expanding demand profile and support multiple expansion.
$ALAB Astera Labs is another candidate after falling 3.23%. The company operates in connectivity and infrastructure for data centers. Rising demand for components that enable fast communication between servers and AI accelerators has made the company more prominent in the market and increased its valuation.
Everpure is also on the candidate list after declining 1.44%, alongside Credo Technology, Heico, Rocket Companies and Royalty Pharma. Estimates indicate that the upcoming update could include two or three changes to the index composition. A high market value alone is not enough for inclusion in the S&P 500.
Companies must also meet profitability requirements, including GAAP net income in the latest quarter and positive cumulative earnings over the previous four quarters. These criteria remain central to positioning around the index inclusion catalyst. Index inclusion is significant because a large portion of the money tracking the S&P 500 is managed through exchange traded funds and index funds.
Any company added to the index receives automatic demand from institutions required to align their holdings with the new composition. These institutional flows can affect the stock and investor positioning. Every addition to the index generally requires another company to leave.
$TTD Trade Desk is among the smallest companies in the index by market value, alongside Builders FirstSource, Norwegian Cruise Line, Molson Coors and Mosaic. Each company has a market value below $8 billion. S&P Dow Jones Indices typically removes companies near the bottom of the index by market value, particularly when they are far below the threshold associated with new entrants.
Only about ten companies in the index currently have a market value below $10 billion. The widening gap between these companies and candidates valued in the tens of billions increases the likelihood of composition changes. The upcoming quarterly rebalancing could therefore create meaningful positioning implications across both potential additions and removals.
SPCX SpaceX will not enter the index in the upcoming update. Although the company went public in June and has already joined the Nasdaq 100, S&P rules require a company to remain public for at least 12 months before it can be considered for inclusion in the S&P 500.
